Biography
Otoha Tabata is a Japanese violist whose playing has been praised for its warmth, expressive depth, and natural sense of line. Having entered the Yehudi Menuhin School at the age of ten and made her London debut the same year, she now performs across Europe and Japan as a soloist and chamber musician.
In 2024 she graduated from the Royal College of Music in London with First Class Honours as a full scholar, having studied privately with Professor Nobuko Imai. Her musicianship has taken her to many of the world's most distinguished stages: she has performed for His Majesty King Charles III at Clarence House, and for the Emperor of Japan during his state visit to the United Kingdom. Recent distinctions include a Third Prize at the 2024 Brahms International Competition, recognition at the 2021 Windsor Festival International String Competition, and a Special Prize of Merit from the Verbier Festival Academy. In 2025 she received the Okayama Grand Prix Arts and Culture Award and joined the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. Alongside her orchestral work she remains a dedicated chamber musician and recitalist, drawn to the viola's singular voice — at once intimate and richly resonant.
